These reasons sufficiently explain why Rose never used the Heart of the Ocean, but none of them speak to why she got rid of it. It's always a good idea to keep a massive payday in a box for emergency reasons, even if it's a personal blow to your hard-earned stoicism to use it. It takes a big person to have hundreds of millions of dollars in a cupboard and not use them, but I still think Rose reealllly could have been a bit more judicious about hanging onto the diamond. Having come from money and fled an empty life stuffed with the same, selling Cal's gift would have meant that she was in some way dependent on his largesse to survive. I also somewhat understand why Rose didn't sell the diamond at all, even after she was safe from that particular repercussion. (Rose could also helped Cal by anonymously sending him the diamond after the crash, but I don't blame Rose for not being a literal saint and bailing out her abusive ex-fiancée. Maybe she was afraid of Cal's father, Nathan, who filed the insurance claim for the diamond, but the claim was settled - he got the money he was after. That's only 17 years after Rose and Cal parted ways! It surely would have been safe for her to sell the diamond then, with no chance of Cal interrupting her peace. But Brock Lovett says Cal died after losing his money in the 1929 Wall Street Crash. If Rose didn't want Cal to find her, then keeping it secret makes perfect sense. Pawning a jewel like the Heart of the Ocean is not easy, and its distinguishable shape and quality would have attracted attention - notably Cal's attention. To a certain point I understand why Rose never sold the diamond.at first. Instead, she promptly chucks 250+ million dollars off the side of his boat while he's asleep. She starts her life over and maintains possession of the jewel, but in her last hours on earth she fails to tells the man who has made a career out of finding the stone her triumphant story. After the tragedy of the RMS Titanic, Rose has the opportunity to fake her death, which she takes, and a swapped coat leaves her with the diamond. I will examine the facts: Caledon Hockley, an assclown of the highest caliber, gifted Rose DeWitt Bukater the Heart of the Ocean, a diamond more valuable than the Hope Diamond (which is worth about $250 million in today's dollars) as a gift for their engagement.
